Aeronautical Engineering is the primary branch of engineering concerned with the research, design, development, construction, testing, science and technology of aircraft. Aircrafts are subjected to dynamic load conditions that arise due to change in Pressure, velocity temperature and structural loads. Consequently, they are usually the products of various technological and engineering disciplines including aerodynamics, propulsion, avionics, materials science, structural analysis and manufacturing. The interaction between these technologies is known as Aeronautical engineering. Because of the complexity and number of disciplines involved, Aeronautical engineering is carried out by teams of engineers, each having their own specialised area of expertise. It includes study in the areas of Aerodynamics, Structures, Propulsion, Aircraft Performance, Stability and Control, Avionics, Flight Vehicle Design, Aircraft Systems & Flight testing. The students get hands on experience through lab experiments in addition to the other engineering disciplines. Students are expected to update their learning by visits, conferences and guest lecturers from experts drawn from HAL, ISRO, IISc, IIT, and NAL etc. Efforts are on to purchase an aircraft (single engine propeller) for practical and maintenance demonstration.
Aerodynamics is the study of how gases interact with moving bodies. Because the gas that we encounter most is air, aerodynamics is primarily concerned with the forces of drag and lift, which are caused by air passing over and around solid bodies. Aerodynamics comes into play in the study of flight and the science of building and operating an aircraft, which is called aeronautics. Aeronautical engineers use the fundamentals of aerodynamics to design aircraft that fly through the Earth's atmosphere.
Propulsion is the study of matter as it flows through various components of jet engines, rocket motors, compressors, combustion, turbines, nozzles and diffusers. Propulsion is a very important part in life. Propulsion brings together the fields of chemistry, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, static dynamics, stress causes, and heat transfers. Propulsion Engineering is a specialized field which is an important part of the Aeronautical Engineering fields.
When designing an aircraft, it’s all about finding the optimal proportion of the weight of the vehicle and payload. It needs to be strong and stiff enough to withstand the exceptional circumstances in which it has to operate. Durability is an important factor. Also, if a part fails, it doesn’t necessarily result infailure of the whole aircraft.The main sections of an aircraft, the fuselage, tail and wing, determine its external shape.
Avionics are the electronic systems used on aircraft, artificial satellites, and spacecraft. Avionic systems include communications, navigation, the display and management of multiple systems, and the hundreds of systems that are fitted to aircraft to perform individual functions.
