The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Mangalore Institute of Technology & Engineering, organised a Faculty Development Program (FDP) on “Creating Engaging Classrooms: A Student-Centric Teaching Approach” on 4th August 2026. The program aimed to strengthen faculty members’ understanding of student-centric teaching practices and encourage the adoption of interactive and learner-focused approaches in the classroom. A total of 37 faculty members actively participated in the FDP, making it an engaging platform for professional development and sharing of innovative teaching practices.
The resource person for the FDP was Dr. Krishna Vedula, Ph.D., ASEE Fellow (2011), ASM Fellow (1995), Dean Emeritus, University of Massachusetts Lowell, USA, and Founder & Executive Director of the Indo Universal Collaboration for Engineering Education (IUCEE). An alumnus of IIT Bombay, Drexel University, and Michigan Technological University, Dr. Vedula has over 40 years of experience in teaching, research, and academic leadership in the USA. He has served as President of the International Federation for Engineering Education Societies (IFEES) during 2010–12 and is the Chief Editor of the Journal of Engineering Education Transformations. His extensive contributions to engineering education have been recognized through several international awards.
The FDP focused on important aspects of student-centric teaching, active learning, Outcome-Based Education (OBE), Bloom’s Taxonomy, lesson planning, and formative assessment. Dr. Vedula emphasized the need to move from conventional teacher-centric instruction towards learner-centred education and encouraged faculty members to frame measurable learning outcomes and design engaging classroom activities. Participants actively engaged in innovative learning activities such as Think–Pair–Share, Brainstorming, Circle Talk, Minute Papers, Jigsaw Learning, classroom quizzes, and the use of AI tools such as ChatGPT to support teaching and learning. Faculty members also participated in lesson-planning exercises and group discussions, gaining practical insights into designing interactive and meaningful classroom experiences.
As a follow-up activity, the participants prepared and submitted student-centric lesson plans, providing an opportunity to apply the concepts discussed during the FDP to their respective teaching practices. The program was organised under the guidance of Dr. Vinayambika S Bhat, Convener, and coordinated by Ms. Sowjanya. The FDP concluded successfully with active participation and interaction from faculty members and contributed to enhancing their awareness and practical skills in student-centric teaching, active learning, lesson planning, and innovative classroom practices, thereby supporting the continuous improvement of teaching and learning at MITE.
