National Pollution Control Day-2025

The IGNITIA – Science Forum of Mangalore Institute of Technology & Engineering organized National Pollution Control Day–2025 on 2nd December 2025 with the objective of creating awareness among first-year engineering students about environmental pollution, industrial safety, and sustainable practices. The technical session was delivered by Er. K. Roopesh, Chief Manager – Quality Control and Environment, Paradeep Phosphate Ltd., Mangalore. The event also featured a live fire extinguisher demonstration conducted by officials from the Fire Station, Alangar, Moodbidri, under Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services.

Er. K. Roopesh holds a Master’s degree in Chemistry (M.Sc.) from Mangalore University, Konaje, and has over 18 years of professional experience in the field of environmental management and quality control. Currently serving as Chief Manager at Paradeep Phosphate Ltd., he plays a crucial role in ensuring environmental compliance, sustainability initiatives, and adherence to regulatory standards. He is also a Member of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), New Delhi, under the Committee for Environmental Management.

During the session, the resource person highlighted major industrial and environmental sources of air pollution, with specific emphasis on emissions from large-scale manufacturing units. He explained various pollution control measures adopted at Paradeep Phosphate Ltd., including filtration systems, scrubbers, cyclones, real-time emission monitoring systems, and the development of green belts around industrial premises.

The session also focused on how industries monitor air quality parameters using sensors and automated systems to ensure compliance with national pollution control norms. The importance of periodic environmental audits and strict adherence to pollution control guidelines was emphasized. The talk reinforced the responsibility of both industries and individuals in reducing pollution and protecting the environment.

In addition to the technical session, officials from the Fire Station, Alangar, Moodbidri conducted a live demonstration on fire safety and fire extinguishers. The demonstration educated students on identifying different types of fire extinguishers and their appropriate usage  during emergency situations. This practical exposure helped students gain confidence and enhanced their understanding of industrial safety practices.

The first-year engineering students actively participated in the event. The sessions were informative and interactive, combining expert talks with practical demonstrations. Students expressed that the program enhanced their awareness of environmental protection, pollution control strategies, and safety measures. Overall, the observance of National Pollution Control Day–2025 was highly successful in sensitizing students towards environmental responsibility, industrial safety, and sustainable development.
